The first film banned in South Africa since the Apartheid, ‘Of Good Report’ is enjoying a limited theatrical release at Bíó Paradís with a final screening tonight.
‘Of Good Report’ is a genre-bending thriller about an affair between a teacher and a student that unfolds, with tragic circumstances.
Parker Sithole (played by Mothusi Magano) is the new teacher in a rural South African town. He’s a quiet loner who becomes romantically involved with Nolitha (played by Petronella Tshuma), a sixteen-year-old student.
Director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka describes the film as “Little Red Riding Hood told from the Wolf’s perspective,” a story that relates to the director’s own experience with violence.
“I’ve experienced first-hand gender-based violence. South Africa, unfortunately, has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world,” he says. Why is it that man finds it necessary to resolve whatever conflicts he has with violence?”
That climate of violence was present in Jahmil’s family. “My own father committed suicide in 1993 when I was thirteen, fourteen. He committed suicide after killing his own girlfriend, who was a good thirty years younger than him,” he says.
