Greenhouse gas emission in Iceland decreased by 9% between 2008 and 2010. The emission of 2010 was 5% less than estimated, RÚV reports.
This is revealed in a report by a committee drawing up an action plan regarding climate issues for the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources.
The decrease can mostly be traced to a rundown of emission due to transport since 2007 and a significant recession of emission from the construction industry. There’s also been an increase in methane gas powered cars, instalment of more footpaths and bike paths and reinforced public transport.
It is stated in the report that promotion of a healthier lifestyle has led to an awakening in society, thus increasing the number of pedestrians and cyclist, but that the increase can also be traced to improved public transport and higher petrol prices.
