The lava cooling efforts near Svartsengi have been completed for now, reports RÚV. Firefighters worked eight-hour shifts around the clock for over a week to cool the lava flowing from the eruption that began along the Sundhnúksgígar crater row on November 20. Parts of the lava edge were cooled to allow for the reinforcement of protective barriers.
State of things in Grindavík
The lava is now flowing almost exclusively to the east and northeast, toward and along Fagradalsfjall. Volcanic tremors have remained steady, accompanied by consistent visible activity in the crater overnight. Gas pollution may persist in Grindavík, as the Icelandic Met Office’s gas dispersion forecast predicts northeasterly winds today.
Activity in the eruption at the Sundhnúkar crater row remained very stable overnight, according to a morning update from the Icelandic Met Office’s natural hazard monitoring team.
