Two low-temperature geothermal zones were discovered in the capital area during Veitur’s pursuit of new hot water sources. One was found in Brimsnes at Kjalarnes; the other at Geldinganes. Veitur describe the discovery as a turning point due to the increased demand for hot water in the capital area.

Utility company Veitur announced that the Kjalarnes find presented a new geothermal system, which could be utilised for the greater Reykjavík area. 40 litres of water at boiling point were discovered. The area’s processing capacity is yet to be measured, but is hinted to supply the maximum need of 10.000 people.

Further research and excavation are needed in Kjalarnes, but water from there is expected to be in circulation in three to five years.

Veitur are more hesitant about Geldingarnes, where the water flows at the rate of 20 litres per second, measuring 90 degrees Celsius.

Long-term testing in Geldinganes is set to start when the current borehole has been drilled to its full depth. Those results will determine how much water can be processed from Geldinganes.
