From Iceland — Most Believe Government Will Hold

Most Believe Government Will Hold

Published January 13, 2010

Most Icelanders surveyed believe the ruling coalition of Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens will stand, according to the latest figures from Gallup.
48% of respondents said they believed the government will hold together, while 32% said they believed it unlikely. 20% had no opinion either way.
The numbers show an increase of confidence in the government, as according to the same survey conducted just last week, about half of those surveyed at that time believed it unlikely the government would hold.
The news is also interesting in light of the fact that most Icelanders surveyed said they would vote for the defeat of the Icesave law if a referendum were held today.
Contrary to public opinion, chairman of the conservative Independence Party Bjarni Benediktsson told reporters that he believes the life or death of the ruling coalition is dependent on whether or not the Icesave law survives the referendum, scheduled for 6 March.
