Two different electrically-powered jeeps are being displayed at Harpa, and developers are planning to help import the vehicles to Iceland.
Eyjan reports that the companies Northern Lights Energy (NLE) and EVEN, both Icelandic companies, are demonstrating the Mercedes Benz ML-350 and Chevrolet Equinox, which the American company AMP Electric Vehicles had converted into electric cars. The general public is invited to stop by Harpa to have a look.
NLE/Even have made a deal with AMP to buy 200 electric jeeps over the next five years. Gísli Gíslason, chairperson of NLE/Even, is optimistic about the electric vehicle market in Iceland. A recent bill in parliament did away with a VAT tax on electric cars, which would put the vehicles on even footing with petrol or diesel powered cars.
But additionally, Gísli wants to see electric power stations set up along the Ring Road. He says these two jeeps can get a full charge at such a station within 10 to 15 minutes.
US ambassador to Iceland Luis E. Arreaga, addressing the crowd at the opening of the exhibition, said that he was very pleased with his test drive, and that the cooperation between AMP and NLE/Even showed that smaller companies can also lead the way when it comes to innovation.
