Per Umferdin.is, 50 metres of the Ring Road near Jökulsá í Lóni, east of the town of Höfn í Hornarfirði has washed away. Due to these conditions the road is closed from Djúpivogur on the east, to near Höfn on the west. RÚV reports that the road will be closed until tomorrow due to water damage. Drivers will be stopped if they attempt to cross.

G. Pétur Matthíasson, of the Icelandic Road Administration, was interviewed by RÚV. He described the damage, stating the Ring Road “Split into 50-metre sections, so it’s quite large. And then there are dams above that are supposed to control the water under the bridge and protect both the bridge and the road, one of which, the older dam, is split into about 100-metre sections.”

Gunnlaugur Ólafsson, a local from Stafafell, was interviewed by Vísir, stating “I’ve never seen so much water in Jökulsá.” According to Visir, the Ring Road was broken in a similar spot last year.

Travellers are encouraged to follow Umferdin.is for road condition updates.

*Update: When published originally we mistakenly said that the road had been washed away near Jökulsárlón.
