The Capital Area Police implores the public to be on the lookout for pickpockets, who are reportedly operating in the downtown area. According to RÚV, theft from pockets, bags, and backpacks has been reported in the vicinity of Hallgrímskirkja.

In a police announcement, authorities describe the thieves as imitating traditional tourist attire. Their main targets are travellers, the police say, and have struck unsuspecting victims in public and accommodation sites.

In recent years, various reports have warned against pickpockets in traffic-heavy destinations. Earlier in March, news outlets reported that gangs of pickpockets targeted tourists in South Iceland.

Witnesses of these crimes are asked to contact the police via the email abending@lrh.is.
