During a cabinet meeting between the Icelandic government and President Halla Tómasdóttir on Sunday, March 23, former minister for children and education Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir formally resigned. On March 20, news broke that Ásthildur had pursued a romantic relationship with a minor 35 years ago.
She is succeeded by the People Party’s MP and parliamentary party chair Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson, who assumed office on Sunday.
As reported by RÚV, Ásthildur only served as minister for 92 days, making her cabinet career one of the shortest-lived in Icelandic history.
At a press meeting at Bessastaðir, government party chairs said the resignation did not affect the coalition.
