A yellow alert is in effect for the entirety of North Iceland today. Travel disturbances across the region are very likely. Meanwhile, many roads in the Westfjörds remain impassable.

As the yellow alert details, gale-force winds will be bearing down on North Iceland today, from the northern portion of the Westfjörds through the northern portion of the east. A great deal of blowing snow, contributing to poor visibility, is very likely and travel will therefore prove difficult. Road closures are possible.

The Westfjörds is certainly bearing the brunt of it, as the latest update of road conditions shows that most of the roads in the region are impassable. It is still possible to drive from the Ring Road into either the south coast of the Westfjörds, or to Ísafjörður, but many long stretches of these roads are still snowy. Today’s gale is likely to make this situation even more difficult.

These conditions are expected to last until very early tomorrow morning.

Iceland as a whole will be experiencing freezing temperatures today, and although the gale is bearing down on the north, it will still be considerably breezy across most of the country today, so be careful when driving today.
