An announcement by the Icelandic Post Office shows that, more than ever, Icelanders are indulging in online shopping. According to Vísir, the week after Cyber Monday has brought a lot of work to post offices in Iceland.

Since 2015 the foreign shipments to Iceland have increased by 140%. “Icelanders are shopping more online and domestic online shopping is becoming an increasingly important part of Iceland’s commerce,” announced the Post Office. This week, the post offices started to receive the packages that were ordered during last week’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Only this year, foreign shipments grew by 43%.

This year The Icelandic Consumers Association received many complaints from people who noticed fake sales being advertised. A rising trend has been for stores to spike the prices a few days before Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and then lower them to the usual price and write it off as a discount.

Nevertheless, we wish you good luck, as the trips to the post-office are usually bittersweet. The excitement for your new discounted foreign item will disappear once you see what you owe in taxes and postal fees.
