Snow and high winds can be expected in the Westfjords today, a region where avalanches can be a serious problem.

According to the latest forecast from the Icelandic Met Office, winds up to 18m/s, with temperatures approaching -10°, can be expected for the Westfjords today. In addition, snowfall is predicted to come through the area through the day today.

This forecast is just one detail of many in what is shaping up to be a very eventful week for weather in Iceland. High winds, snow and plummeting temperatures will be the hallmarks of the days to come in Iceland.

High winds and snow are already difficult enough to travel through; the particular landscape of the Westfjords make travel all the more treacherous. The Westfjords is characterised by tall, steep mountains that lie very close to the coastline, and roads in the area often run very close to the foot of these mountains. As such, it is not unreasonable to consider the very real danger of avalanches, which the area has had many times before.

If you are planning on driving in the Westfjords today, extreme caution is advised. Readers are encouraged to check road conditions in the area before getting behind the wheel.
