Today is not the day to go driving through South Iceland, as even part of Route 1 has been closed to car traffic due to bad weather.

As reported, winds between 18m/s and 25m/s are whipping across South Iceland today, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 50m/s.

The weather has gotten so bad, in fact, that as the latest road conditions map from The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration shows, Route 1 is closed to car traffic in much of South Iceland.

Specifically, Route 1 between Hvolsvöllur and Vík is closed, as is the stretch between Gígjukvísl and Kvísker. Most roads heading into or across the interior are also off limits, and there are icy road conditions across East Iceland.

While the weather is supposed to calm down by this evening, for now the weather is not conducive to safe travelling in these areas. Visitors are advised to stay off the roads during this time, and to frequently consult the above link of the road conditions map for further updates.
