A French tourist made a tragic discovery just outside the volcanic crater of Askja yesterday, when the body of a tourist was found in the lava crags nearby.

Vísir reports that police do not suspect foul play at this stage of the investigations. Rescue workers, with the assistance of park rangers and the police, were called out to help move the body from Askja to Húsavík.

Little has been disclosed about the deceased at the time of this writing. All that is known is that the victim is male, middle-aged, and of foreign origin. More details are still pending contact with the relevant embassy and members of his family.

Police say it is difficult to ascertain when the man died, but they believe it unlikely that the body is more than a month old. The injuries he sustained are not consistent with a crime having been committed.

More details will be reported as they arise.
