RÚV reports a grandfather was accidentally given the wrong grandchild at the kindergarten Kiðagili in Akureyri last month. Superintendent of schools in Akureyri Soffía Vagnsdóttir says a chain of coincidences caused this to happen.

There is a list of people who are allowed to pick specific children up from school, and this got the grandfather to enter the kids’ area. From there, he then went into the wrong classroom where the teacher misunderstood the name of the child.

The grandfather reportedly does not see his grandchild that often, and was therefore apparently unclear about his grandchild’s appearance. About half an hour after he returned home with the child, his wife came home as well. She immediately noticed the wrong child was in their home, but she was able to resolve the matter quickly.

Soffía told reporters that she takes this mistake very seriously. It should not be possible to take the wrong kid home from kindergarten, she said, and while it is impossible to promise that this will not happen again, they will do everything they can to prevent this.
