The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Zhang Weidong will be the next Chinese Ambassador to Iceland, reports DV.

A special reception will be held in Zhang’s honour on October 1 to celebrate his arrival. Zhang will be leaving an ambassadorial post in Micronesia, a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean.

As reported, Ma Jisheng, who has been China’s ambassador to Iceland since 2012, left Iceland on January 23 of this year. By all accounts, he was expected to come back the following March.

China’s foreign ministry has refused to address Jisheng’s whereabouts after reports he and his wife had been arrested for giving secrets to Japan.

Reuters reports that Ma is suspected of becoming a Japanese spy while working in the Chinese embassy in Tokyo between 2004 and 2008.
