The Chinese Ambassador to Iceland left the country last January, and has not been seen nor heard from since.

DV reports that Ma Jisheng, who has been China’s ambassador to Iceland since 2012, left Iceland on January 23 of this year. By all accounts, he was expected to return the following March.

However, Ma Jisheng has not returned, and neither Icelandic nor Chinese authorities can or will comment on his whereabouts.

Urður Gunnarsdóttir, a spokesperson for the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters that the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs informed them in May that Ma Jisheng would not be returning. “We have no other information than that, other than that the Deputy Ambassador is Chen Laiping.”

DV also contacted the Chinese embassy, where a secretary told them that there would be no answers to their questions about Ma Jisheng’s whereabouts at this time.
