Nearly Everyone In Iceland Has Seen Online Porn

Published October 25, 2013

Almost every Icelandic internet user has seen porn online – with over half intending to do so.
According to a poll conducted by doctor of media studies Guðbjörg Hildur Kolbeinsdóttir, Vísir reports, 96% of Icelandic internet users have seen porn online. Of those, 40% said they saw it “against their will” – either by accident or through pornographic advertising.
Of the 56% who went online for the express purpose of finding porn, most reported that they did so privately, at home, as a masturbatory aid. Heterosexual porn was more sought after than gay porn.
A third of respondents said they believed porn enhanced their sex lives, and about half reportedly tried sex acts that they witnessed in porn. Moreover, about 60% said they believe porn should be legalised in Iceland.
Article 210 of the Icelandic General Criminal Code states that the publication of pornography is illegal, and punishable by a fine or imprisonment for up to 6 months. Although the law was written before online porn was created, and thus inapplicable to it, previous Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson hoped to be able to find a way to make online porn illegal in Iceland, to no avail.
