Presidential Candidate Criticises Media Coverage

Published April 11, 2012

Presidential hopeful Ástþór Magnússon criticised the media for “creating” candidates, saying that their coverage of the different people running is out of balance.
Ástþór, who has run for president a few times before, is also running again this year. However, Vísir reports, he has been less than happy with his media coverage – or rather, the lack of it.
In an article he wrote for Fréttablaðið, he compares the size of column space devoted to another candidate, Þóra Arnórsdóttir, to the space given to him, and points out a sizable difference.
“We need look no further than the above comparison,” he writes, “and the presidential campaigns manufactured by [media company] 365 and RÚV to see the power of the media in a nutshell.” Þóra was a broadcast journalist at RÚV, and 365 owns Fréttablaðið.
He believes the discrepancy in coverage should be corrected, and all presidential candidates given the same amount of space to convey their platforms to the general public.
For those interested, Ástþór’s campaign page can be found on Facebook.
