Styrmir: MPs Need Etiquette Course

Published September 15, 2011

Former Morgunblaðið editor Styrmir Gunnarsson urges Alþingi’s Presidential Committee to create a mandatory etiquette course for MPs in light of discussions in parliament over the past few days.
“Some of the things that speakers on the floor have been saying point to such a course being necessary,” Styrmir writes on evropuvaktin.is. “Yesterday an MP called Iceland’s president a ‘presidential ragamuffin,’ another called their fellow MP ‘schizophrenic’ (that person should show more respect to people afflicted with this serious disease), and a third discussed the IQ of the opposition, saying that it was obviously below average.”
Styrmir questions whether people are really being elected to parliament to speak in this manner. “Are MPs being paid taxpayer money for this practice?” he asks.
He concludes: “This recommendation of teaching MPs manners is put forth in all seriousness.”
