University Students’ Association Founded in the West Fjords

Published April 27, 2010

The University Centre of the West Fjords has announced that Coastal and Marine Management students there have formed a student association called Ægir – the only student association in the West Fjords at the higher education level.
The name of the organization borrows from the name of the Norse god of the sea. Ægir also was, apparently, a brewer. The students who formed the organization are aware of this, saying that “Ægir’s namesake organisation aims to uphold his oceanic interests while keeping his party animal image alive: Ægir was set up to represent the needs and interests of students, both academically and socially.”
“We are committed to protecting the academic rights of students, organising fun and educational activities, serving as a channel of communication between students and administration all while evoking the principles and practices of environmental sustainability,” explains Ægir Chairman Alan Deverell.
All Coastal and Marine Management masters’ students are automatic members of the organization, but other students at the university can become associate members. The course sees quite a number of international students.
Ægir intends to have its own webpage soon. You can look out for it on the University Centre’s website, www.uwestfjords.is.
