From Iceland — Mosque In Reykjavík An "Insult"

Mosque In Reykjavík An “Insult”

Published August 21, 2013

“It’s an insult to Iceland’s history, especially the people of Vestmannaeyjar,” writes former Mayor of Reykjavík about plans of building a mosque in the city.

Ólafur F. Magnússon, who was mayor for little less than 7 months in 2008, has expressed his sentiments about the mosque before, and reiterates his stance on the matter in an article in Morgunblaðið today, DV reports.

He refers to the pillaging of Vestmannaeyjar in 1627, called “The Turkish Invasion,” when pirates from Algeria and Morocco (at the time named “Turks”) robbed the entire town of Vestmannaeyjar, captured over 200 people and killed dozens.

Ólafur has been outspoken about his opposition that the Muslim’s Society in Iceland be allowed to build a mosque in the eastern part of Reykjavík. His latest article is called “US President Adams’ words about Islam.”

“[John Quincy] Adams was not fond of Islam and seems to have studied the religion’s background better than most Christians can be bothered doing. Especially these days, when most of the politicians in this country are more occupied with securing power and wealth for themselves rather than concentrating on the interests of the generations to come.”

He then goes on to stating that Muslims are taking up too much space in Icelandic society and that they “will make our descendants’ lives unbearable, if civilian and Christian forces don’t dare to rise up against Islamic influence in this country.”
