In response to repeated statements of intolerance from radio station Útvarp Saga, the Young Social Democrats have proposed a day for everyone to call in.

Útvarp Saga – in particular, their flagship show Línan laus (“The line is open”) – made headlines yesterday when Óskar Steinn Ómarsson, chairperson of the Young Social Democrats in Hafnarfjörður, told Vísir he was astounded by the “prejudice and hate speech” towards the LGBT community he heard from hosts of and people calling in to the programme. In response, he offered to come onto the show to educate its listeners.

In the meantime, the Young Social Democrats have organised a campaign called #OccupySaga. To take place this Friday during Línan laus’ call-in hours (9:00 – 12:00), participants are encouraged to call the show and let themselves be heard.

“Hate speech lives the good life on Útvarp Saga,” the event description reads. “The show’s hosts let it spread and in some cases express agreement with it. Send Útvarp Saga a clear message that hate speech is not tolerated in our society. Let us all call the station this Friday from 9:00 to 12:00 and stand up for minorities such as the LGBT community and immigrants, who are regularly attacked on the show.”
