Two earthquakes struck close to the capital late last night, a couple hours after another hit the north of Iceland.
The Icelandic Met Office reports that a quake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale shook just southeast of Helgafell, not too far south of Hafnarfjörður, at about half past midnight. Another quake, measuring 4.2, struck in the same spot half an hour later.
The quakes were felt throughout the capital area, as far afield as Akranes, and were estimated to originate three to four kilometres under the surface. Several less detectable aftershocks followed in their wake.
Only two hours before, in Eyjafjörður, a 3.7 also quaked, and was felt in Ólafsfjörður, Siglufjörður and in Svarfaðardal. Quakes of this magnitude in that area are not uncommon.
While all of these quakes were relatively mild, Vísir reports that unspecified damage was done to a house in Hafnarfjörður. There was no other reported damage to property, nor were there any injuries or deaths.
