Strangers are taking more than their fair share of free pancakes, which are offered at the gas station N1 in Hvolsvöllur, much to the annoyance of the managers.

The witnesses

Every morning, the station makes pancakes from ten litres of dough. The pancakes are offered for free and are meant as a treat for guides and drivers who stop at the station during work hours. However, not everyone shows the appropriate appreciation for the hospitality and currently, the pancakes are disappearing at a stunning pace. A whistleblower Facebook post brought awareness to the pancake thieves on a support page for tourism workers. In the comment section, multiple people confirmed that they observed similar disobedience, some stating that they saw greedy strangers take up to 25 pancakes.

The victims

Even those who are entitled to the pancakes don’t always remember their manners and hamster them in large quantity, the station manager Jenný Björgvinsdóttir reported to Fréttablaðið. She is proud of the service they offer but fears that operational costs will be too high if the pancake-greed continues. Their attitude remains, however, positive. “Enjoy our hospitality with honesty and love,” Jenny says encouragingly in the article.

The verdict

Yes, free stuff is cool, especially in a country where everything is twice as expensive as in mainland Europe. But please be reasonable and kind, or send a video to us proving you can eat 25 pancakes in one go. If you can, you deserve our respect.
