From Iceland — Meteorologist Calls Warm Weather "Very Serious"

Meteorologist Calls Warm Weather “Very Serious”

Published July 12, 2012

One of Iceland’s most highly respected meteorologists has called our recent spell of warm and sunny weather “a gravely serious situation”.
Iceland has, this summer, been experiencing mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures, to the delight of many who live here. Summers in Iceland, while temperate, are often rainy.
DV now reports that meteorologist Sigurður Þ. Ragnarson – better known as Siggi Stormur – has said that these atypical weather conditions are actually indicative of a “gravely serious situation”.
“It’s maybe very good for tourists and young people,” he said. “But has become gravely serious elsewhere in the country.” Here, he refers to conditions having led to grass drying out and dying on farms, as well as flash fires starting in some locations.
He also contends that warming temperatures could lead to more volcanic eruptions. “When glaciers begin melting and the weight – and with it, the pressure – on volcanoes decreases, the frequency of eruptions increase.”
Warm and sunny temperatures are predicted to continue through the weekend, at the very least.
