From Iceland — Iceland Should Offer Snowden Citizenship

Iceland Should Offer Snowden Citizenship

Published July 4, 2013

The former Minister of the Interior wants Iceland to offer whistle blower Edward Snowden political asylum in Iceland. Ögmundur Jónasson, MP for the Left-Green Movement addressed the Judicial Affairs Committee when he spoke in Parliament on Thursday morning.
He urged the committee to take initiative and take actions to enable Snowden to get Icelandic citizenship, according to RÚV.
The chair of the committee, Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir, MP for the Progressive Party, said in return that Snowden had not applied for citizenship and according to law, he would have to be in Iceland to do that. Therefore, the committee didn’t have any reason to start a process regarding Snowden’s case.
On Wednesday, during his official visit to Iceland, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon condemned Snowden’s actions. He said the whistle blower had caused trouble that outweighed the public’s interest in knowing about the vast electronic surveillance being carried out by NSA. “The Snowden case is something I consider to be misuse,” the UN chief said at a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Committee, Guardian reports.
