The Skeleton Economy

The Icelandic economy has crashed. The government has nationalized all three of the major banks in Iceland and most Icelandic financial institutions overseas are bankrupt. The global credit crisis that has left banks in Europe and the US bankrupt has hit Iceland like a natural disaster. During a two-week period our economy was wiped out and left in ruins

Sunday September 21, the CEO of Glitnir Bank, Lárus Welding was a guest on the political talk show Silfur Egils, where he was asked to elaborate on the international financial crisis that was hitting financial institutions hard on both sides of the Atlantic, and how it would affect the Icelandic banking industry, his own bank included. "We can see now that the flexibility in our structure and the way we have prepared ourselves has landed us a very secure position," he boasted. Today, it seems obvious that he was lying, or at best being delusional, but at least he looked good while doing it.
A week later, on Monday, September 29, the Icelandic government announced its decision to nationalise Glitnir in the face of the bank’s imminent bankruptcy. Sto›ir, the largest shareholder of Glitnir and one of Iceland's biggest investment companies, declared insolvency, and the exchange rate of the Icelandic Króna continued to plummet.
People were concerned when markets closed on Friday October 3. News that trickled out during the weekend suggested that the crisis was getting worse, although Prime Minister, Geir H. Haarde stated that he believed there was no cause for further intervention from the Icelandic government at the time. It was difficult to decipher the situation when markets opened on Monday morning. Despite Prime Minister Haarde's optimism, shares of all major Icelandic banks were not being traded in the Iceland Stock Exchange.
That afternoon, Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde, addressed the nation and cryptically stated that the Icelandic banks were all on the verge of bankruptcy and emergency legislation would be pushed through the parliament, allowing the government to take full control of their operations. The following days gave us news of a total governmental seizure of Landsbanki and Glitnir Bank and that Kaupthing was granted a loan of 500 million Euros to continue its operations, and at the time of print, it looks like it may fall into the hands of the government, too. In a matter of two weeks, the Icelandic financial system went from A-OK to total ruins.

What the Hell Happened?
Only a week passed from the seizure of Glitnir Bank until an emergency legislation was passed in Parliament, allowing the state to overtake all the. This was perhaps the most dramatic week in the history of Icelandic economy. But this eventful period had a long prologue and it will certainly leave us with a bitter aftermath. Although the meltdown was caused by a complex interplay of various economic factors, both at home and abroad, the deciding factors can be traced to a relatively simple cause.
It may have started with the privatization of the state-owned Icelandic banks and the deregulation of the banking industry that began around 2000 and the simultaneous financial influx from foreign investment in the energy and aluminum sectors. Competing with the state-run Housing Financing Fund, the newly privatized banks offered real estate mortgages to individuals at lower interest rates and financed a higher percentage the real estate prices than the Housing Financing Fund offered. This created real estate boom, and caused a rapid increase in the value of the banks. The 40-year real estate mortgages provided by the banks were financed mostly with short-term loans from international banks and financial institutions, leaving the banks dependent on frequent re-financing to keep the ball rolling. During the economic boom of the last few years, this was an easy cycle to maintain.
Encouraged by their rapid growth of the banks, Icelandic investment bankers and companies soon started to expand to other countries, acquiring banks, retail companies, airlines, fashion stores, and professional football teams - more or less (mostly more) financed by short-term loans. New acquisition were used as collateral for further loans to bankroll further acquisition. Before the crisis, the Icelandic banks had accumulated foreign assets worth about 10 times the Icelandic gross domestic product (GDP), 80% of which was financed by foreign loans. When the credit crunch hit, following the sub-prime mortgage collapse in the US, and the cash flow to Icelandic banks dried up, investment companies found it increasingly more difficult to re-finance. Due to the disproportionate size of the banking industry, their collapse would have spelled bankruptcy for the whole country as the government was no longer able to guarantee their operation. Faced with that prospect, Icelandic authorities had little choice but to force the banks into receivership.

Who’s to Blame?
The collapse of the Icelandic economy is a highly complicated issue that involves many technical economical terms, only a part of which are even intelligible to John Q. Public. The collapse will have far-reaching effects for the foreseeable future. Although everyone involved, from bankers to government officials, have tirelessly repeated the mantra that now is not the time to assign blame, and there will be plenty of time to review the situation and find culprits sometime in the future, someone must be held responsible.
Economists in Iceland have gainfully pointed to technical errors made by the Icelandic Central Bank in dealing with inflation and the currency exchange rate of the Icelandic Króna, which may have encouraged Icelandic bankers to seek short term loans in foreign currency to re-loan in Iceland where the interest rates have been much higher than in most of the civilized world, and for failing to maintain the foreign currency reserve at a point that would suggest that the Central Bank could step in to assist the banks in a time of need.
The government should receive it’s share for deregulating the financial sector to the point that they had little or no say in any matters regarding the financial market, and for failing to keep taps on inflation, expansion and maintaining a proper supervision authority on the economy. It has also been a political decision to stash away old and defunct politicians as Governors of the Central Bank, a highly suspectible decision, given thte Central Bank's role in Icelandic economic policy.
The Icelandic people obviously deserve a share of the blame. Their blatant consumerism was fueled by the easy access to cold, hard cash and the misconception that the party would last forever. Well, it was fun while it lasted, but now we will need to clean up and get our house in order.
And last, but not least, there are the adventurous investment bankers who were even more delusional than the general public when they joined the party. Greed seems to have been their guiding principle and eventually, they bit off more than they could chew.

What will Happen Next?
Despite watching our economy collapse in two weeks, the worst may be yet to come. A wave of bankruptcies is on the horizon, likely followed by unemployment, recession and general hardship.
It is a damn shame, really. We all thought we could work in big money-making factories and throw stress-balls around and make silly jokes about David Duchovny's sex addiction, but now it seems that the Icelandic voyage, as President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, called the foreign acquisitions adventure, has stranded.

You finally got what you deserved
Remember the Cod Wars of the 1970s when you used the threat of closing a NATO listening station as a way to force the UK to give up on its fishing rights? (You were too weak and feeble to stand up and fight). Now you steal billions of euros from us and Europe (including money from Charities and money used to provide care to our elderly). You deserve everything you get - you were poor fishermen living on an ugly rock in the Atlantic and you all thought you could live like millionaires by playing the riskiest of capitalist games – you fools. We should send our fishing boats back with our huge Navy and you will be told what to do or be destroyed. The whole world thinks you are a joke and I hope you suffer the way you are making out most vulnerable suffer. We will finally win the Cod Was like every other we have - you've picked on the wrong country. (it would only take our aircraft carriers and cruise missiles a few minutes to destroy what you built with other peoples money.)

The man's a fool
I'm from the UK and have savings with Icesave which have been frozen/ taken and I can't get access to them. Although there are many peeved off people, including myself, I don't hold the people of Iceland to blame. Politicians and regulators - yes. But to blame the population is too easy. Even if mass consumerism meant people were living beyond their means, then Iceland's population were doing no more than many in the USA, Europe and especially the UK have done.

None to blame
It is very difficult pinpoint mistakes. I feel fault is with both govt. They could not control banking and financial services and people have to pay for it. I dont have saving in Icesave but I pray God to solve problem.

How abot the jews?
Iceland had the nerve to try to penetrate the jewish power hub of banking. They "arranged" this crices to wipe them out so they can continue to control us with their money. These kind of things will repest itself until the Europeans get rid og the jewish monters forcing us to rely on their banking- and money tools. Nobody dear to mention this!!! They are scared shit of the jews!!!!

Iceland should be colonized
With all of the Icelandic economy bankrupt and out of business, and at the same time Euopean money to be recovered from Iceland it may be a good idea to sell of the whole country to the highest bidder. Because that is the only thing that the Icelandic criminals heft left: their country. Hopefully this will bring up enough money to cover the billions of euros of debt that these people owe us. My thoughts with you
"The whole world thinks you are a joke..." You'll be laughing at yourself soon, when the rest of the world collapses too. This is due to the shortcomings of the pathetic monetary system of this world, not just the Icelandic banks. We need to rid this world, of the monetary system, it works on scarcity, which we do not have anymore. We can build hospitals, schools, sustainable energy and so forth allover the planet. But we cannot become a sustainable society in the monetary system, because you cannot maximize profits in a sustainable system. I suggest you watch Zeitgeist: Addendum @ http://zeitgeistmovie.com

To Mr. Scarlett
Mr. Brown must be feeling like a pretty big fish right now, chomping on us shrimp when we're down - ensuring that nobody comes out of this any money. Guess what? We know how to deal with big fish - we harpoon the crap out of them. Also if you want to settle this like men (instead of calling out the cavalry like you did in China, The Falklands, India and Ireland) then I'll be the feeble-looking guy waiting behind the Grapevine building holding a pair of knuckledusters with the words "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" emblazoned on them.

Sad things happening
It really sad that people are willing to fight at times likes this. People are loosing their homes, their savings, their jobs and their depts are increasing like we´ve never seen before. Instead of using our energy in fighting each other we should stick together and try to save what´s left. We still have good health, there is no war and we have education which is more then we can say about the rest of the world. I´m Icelandic and I know it´s hard on the people in UK loosing this money but Icelandic people had their savings there as well, 1/3 of the country had money in stocks in the Icelandic banks and companies, the citizens of Iceland are not the ones to blame, we are suffering enough already and were not the ones in charge of our financial system or else we would have taken our saving out a long time ago. I am really sorry for all the people suffering around the world and hopefully we´ll learn a lesson from this and look at life with other perspectives from now on.

Another view from the UK
I'm becoming more and more aware of the amount of almost racist ranting that is coming from people in the UK. Of course people are angry and upset about what's happened with the Icelandic banks, but the vitriol vented here and other places would be better targeted at the bankers and politicians and not at the Icelandic people themselves. I've spent two very enjoyable holidays in Iceland in recent years. The country is beautiful and everyone I encountered was friendly and pleasant. The small towns I visited seemed to have a real sense of community and local pride sorely lacking in many places in the UK. On the whole, if there is a major worldwide depression, I suspect Iceland with its small, well educated population, large reserves of natural resources and abundant energy might be a much better place to sit things out waiting for better times than many other places I can think of. As regards the financial crisis, the fact that Iceland got hit hardest first was not a major surprise; it has been regarded as the canary in the global finance mine for quite a while with good reason. If people really want to understand who and what to blame for the current situation, they could do a lot worse than spending half an hour or so watching the video at the URL below: http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/moneyasdebt.html

Character Test
I don't see how Iceland profited in all of this. They got stuck in this situation a while ago-- it really didn't do the average citizen much good, inflate their home values? Make it so they could leave Iceland and retire away from their friends and loved ones. (At the time of greatest prosperity, it was still beyond most people's means to, say, have a bottle of wine and a nice dinner at a restaurant once a week-- at least, inside Iceland.) The failure is costing Icelanders everything, and to see their allies react with so little empathy at such a time is remarkable. From what I've seen, Iceland at least has the character to forge ahead, whereas the behavior of the panicked leaders of Europe, and especially Mr. Brown, suggests a long slide toward ignominy on their end. Not asking for a Winston Churchill... but even John Major had greater dignity in the face of difficulties.

Welcome
Blaming the icelandic people is just stupid. It's also sort of pointless to blame banks like landsbanki because they were just playing the game. Personally, i'd say this crisis is a result of our blind faith on a "flawless" market. Everyone thought the government should regulate as little as possible, so the wheels of the economy would be free to spin as fast as they possibly could. Again, we have evidence that things are not that simple. That doesn't mean the government should be always present, but it indicates that there are problems on both extremes. The government is not perfect, but neither is the market. Anyway.. Welcome to the realm of economic chaos. I guess now we have more in common than just football (i'm from brazil btw). Best of luck.

I'd say: "Sink the Viking island and be done with it..."
It is good to see this corrupt country with its criminals as bankers and politicians to go down the drain. That will teach them a lesson! The Icelandic assets in the UK and all around the world will be frozen and eventually taken over. And then still there remains debt, so best is indeed to colonize this island and make the people work off the debt, at low wages of course. The arrogant prime minister could be put to work in the salt mines and end his days in the depth of the earth, like the troll he is. And after a hundred years or so, when the debt is payed off (inluding the 9% promised interest of course), the whole island could be used as a test ground for atomic bombs, so that it may be of some last use, so that the whole rotten ground may sink to the bottom of the ocean...

Keep you head up Iceland
Big Mistakes have been made here. Big Mistakes will happen all over the world again and again as they have in the past. This is your island's mistake and you will deal with it. People will get there money back (hopefully) eventually. It is going to be bad everywhere for a while. That is why you see so much anger here. I bet most of the anger on this page is from people that didn’t even have money in Icelandic banks. They are just seeing their own savings disappear and are looking for someone or anyone to blame. I have been to Iceland. It is a beautiful place. Many Icelanders did not really like me, and found me easy to spot as an American because I foolishly wore a North Face jacket. They did not like me because of mistakes my country has made. There were also some people that treated me as a normal person who does not make international decisions, who decided to visit a "friendly", expensive country with one of his two annual weeks of vacation. Note to Icelanders: You may feel the same way as you travel about. It sucks. I may not have made any friends in Iceland, but I did observe a very strong community, filled with intelligent soft spoken people. I did not observe an arrogant, money hungry risk it all for the sake of wealth now culture. I am sure there is blame, and a few of those types that are behind this disaster, but the people I met where anything but that. Iceland will get on it's feet. It will be different, but your educational system is something to be admired and there are plenty of young minds that will be put to the test to direct Island's future. As for the angry English, Dutch, Germans etc. Take it easy. I am sorry your money is locked up. I would be furious, but it does not good. I do think you will get it back somehow. This is a worldwide economic event. It is going to get a lot worse. A lot worse. Other countries will go bankrupt. Other assets will be locked. Jobs will be lost. There is no point in jumping on top of the first one to go down. It will not get your money back faster.

The Future???
I think we should raise the tone a bit. The freezing of Iceland assets is a barganing chip the UK is playing with respect to Iceland. Pay up or we freeze all your assets ...and my guess is, also block any access to rescue funds from the IMF or anywere else. In real politik is that Iceland has to deal with Gordon Brown who needs to win something to boost his precarious party position at home. It is inevitable that Iceland will take a big hit. It seems highly likely that this crisis will change the minds of the Icelandic people to join the EU and sweep aside the fishing lobby at home who have always blocked EU membership. This crisis and total financial collapse would not have happenned if they were part of Europe within the Eurozone. The banks could have not acted in the way they have to any extent. In fact they would probably have long been absorbed by the European major banking institutions. Now is not the time to be a small nation of 400,000 people with no money just debts and out on your own.

CORRUPTION is BUILT IN to the monetary system
"It is good to see this corrupt country with its criminals as bankers and politicians to go down the drain. That will teach them a lesson!" All bankers are corrupt. You know, if I believed terrorism was a real world threat and Bin Laden was real - then it's actually hilarious because he's getting exactly what he wants. NO WAY, NO EU
If Iceland joins the EU as a result of this. I will die.
11.10.2008 09:59:45 - W. Churchill
Iceland in the EU? I think not...
Iceland has placed itself outside of the European community on purpose, it wanted to be independent. That may all very well be, but at the cost that now it has to sort out the financial problems itself. With no luck it has asked the EU and other countries for help, it is not even sure wether the IMF will help Iceland. The efforts to keep up the exchange rate of the krona have dried up the little monetary reserves the country had. Iceland has accepted a loan of US$ 4 billion of the Russian mafia, need I say more? It is becoming all to clear that the Icelandic government, along with the deregulated Icelandic banking system lacking effective control, has placed itself and their country into the arms of international criminals and money-hungry egoists. People were only to happy no longer to be depended upon the fishing industry; the off-shore banking industry would make Iceland one of the richest countries of the world, so the dream went... We all see the result, and now Iceland has to pay, to pay dearly... And people in Iceland shouldn't say 'We are not to blame..', because they knew, they knew very well what their government was doing, and they all profited from their corrupt ways. And there is no way that the European Union is thinking of getting this malicious and corrupt bunch aboard, just in order to save their skin...

Financial hurricane, but we'll survive
There are some extraordinary and depressing comments here (I suspect one person has written several). Reading them I could almost give up hope for the future of the world as most of the planet is experiencing a financial hurricane. What a lot of different culprits apparently caused the Icelandic banking collapse .... Jews, "Cod War" participents, consumerism, central banks, politicians, the Russian mafia, America & England, Iceland's historic isolationism etc etc). I'm from the UK - and yes my savings are not currently accessible. My local council has supposedly "lost" £20 million and even my favourite cat charity is £12 million short. I love Iceland and you must also
After having spent the past week in Reykjavik, I am in love with your country. I had never seen such beauty until I visited. It is lush, stoic and sensuous. In order for it to survive, you must also either re-discover or perhaps discover your love and somehow re-develop you sense of nationalism. Get out to the country. Go look at a waterfall. Remember just how green the moss really is. Go sit in a hot pot. Please smile every now and then. Be happy when you are not. And please, for God's Sake, stop parking your Porsche on the sidewalk. That is very tacky.

If I learned anything from my travels in Islandi is their fierce introspective nature. One man stared at me thoughtfully on an entire plane AND bus ride yet said absolutely nothing nor tried the attempt to. Of course silly man he talked about me like a storm to his friend without bothering to maybe wonder if I understood Icelandic. Perhaps Icelanders need to come to grips with this, they may be very far away separated by ocean and a minimal population to boot, but the world too looks at it with curious and understanding eyes. They are not always stop-over country. If they are to truly pursue a new economy, they will need to first reconnect with the human family.

Joe blow Icelanders...
Wow, that's not been my impression. I just moved here and most of the people I have met or talked to have been hit very hard. Even the guy who drove the moving van and helped me move in said he had lost his entire retirement fund....the banks convinced people to take foreign currency loans or buy bank stock. Of course, the bank stock is now worthless and the foreign currency loan payments have effectively doubled given the value of the ISK. So that loan for a car or a home is now twice as expensive, but your salary is the same. Prices are rising and salaries are staying the same -- this is affecting "normal" Icelanders. As for the whole thing about the Royal Navy storming the shores and Jewish banking conspiracy stuff...really? It's 2008, I thought we were past that sort of idiocy.

Island should look to the Nordic Countries for help. Ask Norway for help with the re-foundings and long term loans. We will treat You as a cousin in trouble. I do not think the Norwegian Gouvernment would require any bribe or part of your resources.

USA is the root cause of this economic crisis
The US now has a chance to vote and make a Presidential change in the next four years ... what will be the outcome? Four more wars! Four more Enron's! Four more renditions! Four more Katrina victims! Four more tortures! Four more Wall Street lobbyists! Four more bailouts! Four more US soldier and Iraqi lives lost! Four more religious extremists! Four more Guantanamo's! Four more credit card companies assessing fees and variable interest rates! Four more mortgage backed securities! Four more CIA operatives outed by the US government! Four more oil comanies! Four more foreclosures! Four more defense spending bills passed! Four more K Street lobbyists! Four more anti-environment laws past! Four more lousy FEMA and EPA directors! Four more off-shore platforms! Four more DeLay-Abramoff's! Four more prisons built! Four more gun laws? Four more Cold War Zeroes in the Pentagon! Four more people bankrupt due to lack of health insurance! Four more hurricanes due to increasing climate change! Four more countries affected by US foreign policy and Wall Street greed! ... wait, there's something missing: ONE GLOBAL UPRISING!

Immaturity solving problems??
wow. i find it amusing that in this day and age people are still holding imature grudges.im only 17 years of age and i cant belive that people probably twice my age have such narrow views! this sort of country hating isnt going to solve anyones problems and to be honest, it just makes you look like an idiot. loving your country and wanting to protect its way of life is nothing which should come under fire, especially by the people of countries who have abandoned all sense of tradition in favour of capatalist gain. i know that this will all work out for iceland without any drastic measures having to be taken. best of luck iceland...

Iceland will recover
As a US citizen I would like to say the most Americans consider Iceland an ally and have great respect for the Icelandic people. The nation of Iceland is strong and the people are strong and you will recover. You have many friends here in the US. It may take a few years, but you will prosper again. Good luck and godspeed.

Grow up!
People are losing their savings all over the world and yet silly British cry-babies go running around pointing fingers at other nations for giving them a "boo-boo"! Because it's just so noble to drudge up long-suppressed nationalist hatred against a smaller nation when they're already down. Thankfully, from what I know of Icelanders they have too much good sense to be affected by such absurd sentiments.

Take a look at yourself for just a minute...
People in The Netherlands who put their money into Icesave should also blame themselves. If you had just a little bit of intelligence, you would have known that: A) The Icelandic economy was in high risk on its own, it's not a coincidence Iceland suffers the most in this financial crisis. B) When someone offers you much more interest than others, there's a reason for it. There should be many warning bells going off in your head. What's actually happening now is that you made a stupid, high-risk move with your money with a possible payoff of higher interest. Normally the flip side of high return means higher risk. But in this case it turns out there was no risk at all. Now it is really going wrong, you still get your money back! This is indeed an incentive for everybody to just put their money in high interest, high risk accounts. The state will give it back anyway. Furthermore, the Icelandic people are suffering the most. They CAN'T help the fact they put their money in Icelandic banks, because that's all they have. A greedy minority in the country thought they could conquer the world on vapor. By far most Icelandic people are suffering because of them. They can't pay for their houses, while they did nothing wrong and are just plain hardworking people. Dutch people who have the nerve to blame the whole of Iceland for the (slighty possible) loss of savings should be ashamed.

Iceland
""most Americans consider Iceland an ally and have great respect for the Icelandic people. " That's not accurate. Most Americans have never given much, if any, thought to Iceland. It's a tiny country. Let's keep it in perspective folks. PS< who's more mentaly disturbed Kelvin Klump" or "Raggi Kalli" ?

Angry people
It's very understandable that people who had accounts in icesave are angry, and to vent their anger is not only reasonable but even healthy. However it must be said that to blame an entire nation for the actions of a few corrupt, stupid and/or incompetent people is nothing short of racism. Most Icelandic people are not better or worse than anybody else and this economic abomination has hit the public hard, and will continue to hit us hard for a long time. So the next time you want to vent your anger, consider the fact that not all Icelanders are greedy idiots, but just regular people trying to get by as best they can.

Where were the dissidents?
Finland had a similar bank crises for 16 years ago. Real estate speculation occurred afte deregulation and then in spring 1991 it all turned sour. There were critical voices. I was on of them in Finland. Who were the critical voises in Iceland 2-3 years ago?
