Two downtown bars well known for violence and causing neighbourhood disturbances will not be having their operating licences renewed.
The decision was made by capital area police, RÚV reports. The city had issued two-year permits at the beginning of last year to Mónakó and Monte Carlo with the condition that they tone down the violence and not disturb the neighbourhood.
Despite this, police report that they have been called to Monte Carlo alone some 85 times in the past eleven months, 38 times for incidents within the bar itself. And Mónakó things fair slightly better, where police were called to the scene 43 times, with 17 incidents happening inside the establishment.
After repeated requests from residents near the bars, their permits to operate will not be renewed.
Jónas Örn Jónasson, a lawyer for the owners of the bars, said that they will appeal the matter to the Ministry of the Interior.
