Abandoned Iceland #6: Icelandic Forest—Heiðmörk

Art Bicnick

In this edition of Abandoned Iceland, Hannah Jane Cohen and photography editor Art Bicnick pay a memorable visit to Heiðmörk, a place of incomparable beauty. One of the oldest jokes about Iceland is that “if you get lost in an Icelandic forest, just stand up”; an affectionate jab at the dearth of trees taller than one metre. At Heiðmörk, that old saw is turned on its head, as the trees tower high above you and give the impression that you’re in some Middle Earthian fantasy land.
