The Icelandic Met Office has issued yellow weather alerts for most regions due to strong northeasterly gales and storms, reports RÚV. Sharp wind gusts are expected near mountains, and roads are likely to become extremely slippery tonight and tomorrow as temperatures rise.
In East and Southeast Iceland, warnings have also been issued for sleet and thaw conditions. Yellow alerts are currently in effect across most of the country, with more expected to follow.
A meteorologist from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration warns that many roads will become icy as compacted snow begins to melt overnight and tomorrow. Gusty winds are also expected in the Öræfi region tonight and through midday tomorrow, where speeds may reach 40 to 45 metres per second in gusts.
The weather alerts will be in effect from 7:00 until 14:00 tomorrow and will remain active until either tomorrow evening or Saturday morning, depending on the area.
In South Iceland, the warning mainly applies to the Eyjafjöll area, where strong gusts are expected near mountains. Around Faxaflói Bay, gales or storms are forecast on the southern part of Snæfellsnes, particularly under the mountains. High winds are also expected in Dalir, Barðaströnd, the Westfjords, Strandir, and northwestern Iceland.
In East Iceland, a thaw warning will be in effect from 7:00 to 17:00 tomorrow. Heavy rainfall and a rapid rise in temperature could lead to melting snow, increased runoff, and rising river levels. Significant ice formation is also possible.
A similar warning applies in Southeast Iceland from 6:00 until 13:00 tomorrow, particularly beneath Vatnajökull and in the Mýrdalur area, where heavy melting and flooding risks are expected, along with the potential for icy conditions.
