A new video of tourists being splashed by waves at Reynisfjara has attracted a lot of attention on social media in recent days. Fortunately, no one appears to have been seriously injured, reports Vísir.

The clip, which appeared on Facebook and TikTok, was recorded by Marek from Slovakia on Tuesday, October 7.

In the video, a tourist in an orange raincoat can be seen posing by the basalt columns at the high-tide line in Reynisfjara. Suddenly, a wave crashes over him and the nearby people. Marek says the tourists were from China and that no one was harmed.

“The man was in exactly the same position after the wave, just soaking wet,” Marek told Vísir.

Yellow, orange, and red warning lights are used to indicate conditions on the beach at any given time. Marek said that on this day, the orange light was on, signalling considerable danger and warning people to stay well away from the surf.

The incident is yet another reminder of the danger at Reynisfjara. A fatal accident occurred at Reynisfjara in early August when a nine-year-old girl from Germany was swept away by a wave.  This was the first fatality since additional safety measures were introduced at the site following the previous deaths three and four years ago. These measures included improved signage and information, security cameras, and lighted signs indicating the current conditions, including wave height and how far down the beach it is safe to go. Despite these measures, there have been repeated instances of tourists at Reynisfjara ignoring these lights and putting themselves in clear danger.
