Rescue teams assisted two tourists last night who had become lost in fog and rain near Landmannalaugar, reports RÚV. The hikers had been navigating the trail between Landmannalaugar and Hrafntinnusker when they realised they were disoriented and contacted the Emergency Line at around 20:00.

Location data indicated they were heading toward Landmannalaugar.

The hut wardens at Landmannalaugar and a rescue team member stationed there began the search for the two tourists. In addition, rescue teams across southern Iceland were called out.

The tourists were found around 22:30 when rescue personnel came across them. They were not far from the hut at Landmannalaugar. Earlier in the day, they had been hiking around the hot springs and had for a time gotten quite far toward Hrafntinnusker.

Rescue teams that had not yet arrived at the scene were turned back, as was the Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter.
