I’m going to need you to sit down, have a cup of coffee, and chill out for a second. Grab a pair of headphones, silence your phone, and go listen to a few of these tracks we’ve got lined up. Think about your dreams, your state in the world, and make one of your wishes come true. Should you pour a bag of Nóa Kropp into a bowl with some milk and eat for breakfast, Cocoa Puffs style? Yes, you should. Should you buy a boat? I think you should. Do you want to keep track of Icelandic music? Yes, you do.
Dottir.x — On ur mind
Released March 21
Los Angeles implant Krista Hrönn Héðinsdóttir originally moved out west to pursue studies in film. Apparently, she’s building up a buzz in acting and made a left turn into music while at it. Collaborating with British producer Fil Thorpe, dóttir.x’s debut is a buzzing, melancholic EDM track — reminiscent of Kiasmos — with a focus on fashion over function. JB
Kusk & Óviti — LÆT FRÁ MÉR LÆTI
Released March 21
Floating around the Reykjavík grassroots scene since her 2022 Músíktilraunir victory, 24-year-old Kusk was quick to find her partner in crime Óviti. Almost inseparable at this point, the duo are frequently spotted performing together. In recent developments, the two artists have joined forces with Prikið’s in-house label Sticky Records. What that brings is too early to tell, but one can hope for riskier and more interesting plays by Kusk and Óviti. JB
Pitenz — 7
Released March 27
Represented by the Akureyri-based artist collective MBS comes the newest release by Pitenz. It’s a simple idea: name the album seven and keep the tracklist to seven. Oh, and sing in seven different languages. We don’t know if the services of the Babel fish were rendered during the album process, but according to the story, Pitenz — Áki — speaks English, French, Spanish, Danish, German, Estonian, and Icelandic (duh). 7 is an eclectic mix of cultural waves and genres, and best experienced with seven dictionaries in hand. JB
R.M Hendrix — Yuks
Released March 28
When R.M. Hendrix moved to Reykjavík, he made it a point to get to know the local creatives better. In his early days in the capital, he launched the podcast Two Beats Ahead!, interviewing local musicians and artists to explore the concepts introduced in his synonymous book. Author, graphic designer, and creative director, R.M. Hendrix continues his artistic pursuits with Yuks. Inspired by dream-pop and experimental electronica — to name a few — his album dives into themes of political satire and environmental concerns, reflecting on the current state of affairs happening across the pond. Supersport! — Stærsta hugmyndin
Released March 28
Putting out their first release since the acclaimed LP allt sem hefur gerst, indie darlings Supersport! hit the ground running with their newest single. Borne out of a “half-manic flow” last February, the song quickly materialised, bearing the semblance of the speed and intensity of the whole process. Here, Supersport! utilises the skills of Spacestation frontman Björgúlfur, who can be heard ad-libbing in the background. What is this, a crossover episode? JB
