A strawberry greenhouse has been badly damaged last night in Bláskógabyggð. The greenhouse measures about 2,000 square meters and is home to about 18,200 strawberry plants.

We have been having some awful weather here as of late, so we’re specially grateful for our comfy traditional lopapeysa sweaters, the beautiful woolen garments which have been keeping Icelanders warm for generations. They’re available in our shop, and ours are hand-knitted right here in Iceland.

“There will be no berries until at least the next year,” said Hólmfríður Geirsdóttir, a horticultural farmer and owner of Strawberry Land in Bláskógabyggð.

During the summer, her greenhouse produces 1000-1500 kg of strawberries a week. The damage done by the storm is yet hard to estimate, but it seems like the greenhouse will be out of work for at least one season.

We have reported earlier that Iceland has been hit by yet another severe storm. As many roads continue to be closed, check SafeTravel.is for latest weather and road conditions updates.
