There are multiple road closures all across Iceland today, and where roads are not impassable, almost all of them are difficult at best to travel on. At the same time, a blizzard is bearing down on East Iceland today, and is expected to last through early tomorrow morning.

As can be seen from the road conditions map of the Icelandic Road Administration, roads out of Reykjavík, in Suðurnes, South Iceland, and the Westfjörds are closed. Elsewhere, roads are either slippery or difficult, with the exception of the northwest, where roads remain passable for now.

Complicating matters is the yellow alert currently in effect for the southeast, East Fjörds and the Highlands. Winds from 13 to 20 metres per second with blowing snow can be expected across the east.

The southeast is being hit particularly hard, with winds from 18 to 28 metres per second and gusts near mountains reaching up to 35 metres per second.

Road travel throughout these areas is not recommended, but conditions are expected to improve by 6:00 tomorrow morning.

As always, be sure and check road conditions and the weather forecast before traveling anywhere in Iceland, especially in the wintertime.
