Not all of us own a car, but many of us have places to go. For such people, the municipal bus service (Strætó) exists, which also covers transport services for the disabled and the elderly.

As the holiday season is upon us, it’s important to know when, or if, these services are running in the greater Reykjavík area during Christmastime and New Year’s.

On Christmas Eve, which is tomorrow, city buses will be running according to the Saturday schedule. Extra routes will be added in the morning, but all service will be ended around 15:00.

On Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, buses will run according to the Sunday schedule, with the caveat that New Year’s Eve service only extends until about 15:00.

To see how the route you’re likely to take will be running on any of these days, refer to this handy schedule (.pdf) and look for your route number. You can also visit the official site or call them at 540-2700.
