This morning, the coast guard’s patrol ship Þór made contact with the massive storm that is expected to hit us later today. While conducting routine patrols in Ísafjörður, the tremendous vessel managed to look like a speck of dust in the powerful weather.
There has been very little ship activity in the region due to the projected forecast. Nevertheless, the coast guard has been monitoring the ocean around the country in recent days. Authorities in the North believe that the storm will exceed all expectations. It’s the first red alert in the history of the weather warning system of the Icelandic Meteorological Office. This red alert is valid in the west from 17:00 to midnight.
The videos below were taken by Þór’s crew when the ship left Dýrafjörður early this morning. The ship was rocked by heavy winds, rain, and snow. If this is a precursor to what we can expect to see later today, snuggle in tight and turn up the heat. Let’s all hope that the internet stays on.
