The weather in the greater capital area this week is forecast to be particularly pleasant, and most other parts of the countryside may get lucky, too.

The forecast from the Icelandic Met Office may come as a relief to those who experienced the wet and windy weekend we went through.

The greater Reykjavík area will be experiencing partly to mostly sunny skies all this week and through the weekend, with relatively calm winds and almost no precipitation. Temperatures, though, will plummet—we are expected to drop into the single digits and freezing for most of the week.

In fact, the same can be said for much of the countryside. The only notable exceptions are the southeast and the Westfjords, which may experience cloudy skies and some precipitation later in the week.

That being the case, if you’ve just arrived in Iceland and have a rental car, this week would be a perfect time to hit the road and see more of the country. At the same time, weather forecasting is always an inexact science, so be sure to check the daily forecast and road conditions before getting behind the wheel.
