A portion of the Ring Road will close today, as high winds and rain descend upon the country.

The Icelandic Met Office reports high winds touching down in the Westfjords this morning will spread to other areas of the country. Stormy conditions, with winds reaching upwards of 15 to 25 metres per second, can be expected in the east and south of the country, along with rain and hail.

In fact, MBL reports that the portion of the Ring Road between Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Jökulsárlón will be closed, and the portion of the road under Eyjafjall will likely also be closed this afternoon.

As such, it is highly inadvisable to go traveling through the south and east of Iceland today. These conditions may extend into tomorrow.

Follow the Met Office’s English page for all available weather updates as they arrive.
