Several passengers and drivers will face high fines after being caught driving in potentially dangerous and restricted areas near the Holuhraun volcanic eruption, reports RÚV.

Húsavík sheriff, Svavar Pálsson, did not want to make a statement on the matter when contacted but said that all traffic in the volcano’s surrounding area – by foot or car – was strictly forbidden. “The police have been patrolling the area, by land and air and people can expect this to continue,” said Svavar.

Geologist Björn Oddsson told RÚV that the area and roads restricted by police are incredibly unstable at this time and that the situation on the ground could change quickly without warning.
