Yoko Ono has announced on her Facebook page that she intends to light the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland on August 7 in remembrance of the victims who have perished in Israel and Palestine.

Yoko writes:

As all of us are devastated by the loss of so many lives of innocent children in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, I will be lighting IMAGINE PEACE TOWER on Thursday 7th August, hoping that such violence will stop immediately.

Roughly 1.400 Palestinians and 60 Israelis have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. There have been a number of protests in Iceland condemning disproportionate military force in Gaza and earlier this week, 2000 people attended a demonstration in front of the US Embassy protesting America’s plans to rearm the Israeli military.

As reported, the US Embassy in Iceland says they have received the written statement from protesters who oppose the Gaza attacks, and “have delivered this message back to appropriate colleagues in Washington”.

The Imagine Peace Tower was created as a memorial to John Lennon and has the words, “Imagine Peace” written on the monument’s exterior in 24 languages. The memorial, which consists of a tall tower of lights and prisms that reflect a column of light vertically into the sky, has become a tourist attraction for Icelanders and foreigners alike.
