A 50-seat train could soon be gracing the Old Harbour of Reykjavík within the next two weeks.

According to the application (.pdf file) submitted to harbour authorities, the train in question drives at about walking speed. The proposed route would begin at Miðbakki, and continue its way westward, close to the shoreline of the Old Harbour of Reykjavík, before coming to a stop at the Víkin Maritime Museum. The train would make hourly departures, and run in both directions.

The man behind the application, Eysteinn Þ. Yngvason, told Vísir that he bought the train himself when he ran the Viðey ferry, which he operated until 2008. Though only used a few weekends, he told reporters it was very popular with tourists.

Eysteinn says he has met with harbour authorities to fine tune the remaining logistical details, and hopes the train can be up and running by the beginning of next month.
