From Iceland — University Academics May Strike

University Academics May Strike

Published March 13, 2014

The Society of University Teachers (FH) has decided to hold a vote on whether or not to initiate a temporary strike.

According to an announcement on their home page, the proposed strike would happen between April 25 and May 10 – a busy time for final exams.

The statement contends that “it is important to gain wage increases in harmony with salary developments on the general market over the part five years.”

RÚV spoke with FH chairperson Jörundur Guðmundsson, who told reporters that the initiative was brought about through the failure to arrive at a wage increase from the state that FH members felt was suitable. At the same time, academics have had to deal with numerous cuts from the government in other areas.

The vote on whether or not to strike will be held from March 17 to 21.
