From Iceland — New Association For Women In Fisheries

New Association For Women In Fisheries

Published February 24, 2014

A new association has been founded for women working in Iceland’s fishing industry, reports RÚV.

In the introductory meeting for Women in Fisheries, held yesterday, the vice chairwoman of the association asserted that there needs to be greater visibility of women working in fisheries and that relationships between them needed to be reinforced.

There were at least 100 people present for the introductory meeting and Berta Daníelsdóttir, SSU Manager at Marel and vice chairwoman of the new association said that while the fishing industry has stereotypically been viewed as a male dominated profession, she was surprised to see how many energetic, passionate and strong women were working in the Icelandic fishing industry.

The aim of the association will be to strengthen the network of women working in fisheries as well as inspire a new generation of women to join, what they see as an exciting industry.
