A new website has published the names and pictures of 50 Icelandic men who are said to be convicted pedophiles, RÚV reports. Five of the individuals pictured on the page have filed charges against the page administrators with the police.
The website grew out of a closed Facebook group which had 11,000 members. When it was launched, the Facebook page published the names and photos of 26 men who had been convicted of sexual offenses against children in Iceland. It has now been closed down, with the newly expanded website taking its place.
Each photograph on the website is accompanied by links to the individual’s sentence, as well as articles about the men’s offences in the media. In some cases, addresses are also published. Group members are invited to send further information about the men’s circumstances to a posted email address.
Lawyer Vilhjálmur H. Vilhjálmsson has taken the case of the five men who have filed charges. According to information from the police, the charges are under review, but a formal investigation has not begun. But the charges may change, depending on what information is found about the people who own and maintain the website. The site administrators issued a statement indicating that they are willing to face the charges in court.
