From Iceland — Become A Refugee For 24 Hours

Become A Refugee For 24 Hours

Published September 4, 2013

The Red Cross is inviting the general public to experience, for 24 hours, what it’s like to be a refugee.
The Red Cross has opened registration for the event, called Á Flotta (On The Run), to everyone. During the exercise, which lasts about a day, participants will get to experience some of the uncertainty, hostility, prejudice, fatigue and hunger that asylum seekers the world over must endure – often for months or even years on end.
There will be, though, some crucial differences. Participants are asked to have a sleeping bag, warm clothes, and a full stomach. None of the “guards” at the event will be armed, nor will they engage in physical contact with participants. Those who do sign up for the experience may also quit the exercise at any time.
Those interested can contact the Red Cross at, or 545 0400.
