From Iceland — Police Officer Charged With Assault

Police Officer Charged With Assault

Published August 30, 2013

A police officer who was caught on video strong-arming an intoxicated woman has been officially charged with assault by the State Prosecutor’s office.
Last July, observers recorded a police officer confronting an intoxicated woman, grabbing her arm and swinging her into a sidewalk bench before dragging her to the ground and arresting her. The video was widely circulated, and led to the suspension of the officer in question while investigations were conducted.
Today, the State Prosecutor’s office announced that the officer has been charged with assault and violation of public service.
Snorri Magnússon, the chairperson of the Police Federation of Iceland, told reporters that the officer’s response had been “natural”, saying that it is part of a police officer’s job to use force when necessary.
