Screams To Warm-Up For Reykjavík Dance Festival

Published August 14, 2013

The long awaited chance to scream inside a chamber begins on Friday, as a warm-up for the Reykjavík Dance Festival.
It‘s the opening of the ‘Black Yoga Screaming Chamber’, a performance-related installation at the Reykjavík Dance Festival, by the artistic directors of this year’s festival, Erna Ómarsdóttir and Valdimar Jóhannsson, which together form the group Shalala.
Mayor Jón Gnarr will inaugurate the chamber at Dansverkstæðið on Skúlagata 30 (next to KEX) at 16:00 on Friday, by being the first one to scream inside it. After that, the general public can pop in for a scream when passing by a chamber. The chambers will be set up Harpa, Hafnarhús and Mál og menning on Laugavegur as well.
All the screams will be recorded and within a few weeks, participants will receive their own personal Black Yoga Mantra with their screams mixed together with all the others.
The Reykjavík Dance Festival 2013 is a ten-day festival which starts 23 August. A press release from the festival’s organisers states:
“Reykjavík Dance Festival 2013 will be a personal affair – with no one correct route through it. As directors of the festival, Erna and Valdi – have avoided the religiosity of a strict thematic, and instead steadily pieced together a programme of home-grown and international contributions that for one reason or another they have found to be important and interesting. As a consequence a particular aesthetic – often associated with Erna, Valdi and their company Shalala – has emerged. An aesthetic of extremities – that shines across the festival’s programme in surprising ways.”
So, if you need to scream, for whatever reason, here’s your chance!
