From Iceland — A Cable Car For Esja

A Cable Car For Esja

Published July 10, 2013

The idea of building a cable car system to bring tourists up Esja without all the strenuous exertion of walking is being discussed.
Sigurður Skagfjörð Sigurðsson, an engineer with VJI Consulting believes that building a cable car system on the side of Esja is a possibility and could be a nice addition to the existing tourist activities in the area, RÚV reports.
The main concern with the potential development is how a cable car would function with the unpredictable weather on Esja’s slopes, an obstacle that Sigurður and VJI Consultants will examine in a detailed study prior to beginning any development.
The proposed cable car system will feature two cars capable of carrying 30 passengers each. The cars will be supported by a base system, middle support and top station, and will cost approximately 3 billion ISK to construct. The cable cars could be functional by mid-2016.
